Following are 4 courses from MIT Open Courseware (OCW) that a newbie would consider for enhancing his concepts for working in Java web applications:

  1. Software Engineering for Web Applications: The objective of the course is to enhance the familiarity of students with some of the following key concepts:
    • Concurrency
    • Unpredictable load
    • Security risks
    • Opportunity for wide-area distributed computing
    • Creating a reliable and stateful user experience on top of unreliable connections and stateless protocols
    • Extreme requirements and absurd development schedules
    • Requirements that change mid-way through a project, sometimes because of experience gained from testing with users
    • User demands for a multi-modal interface

The entire course can be downloaded from following link:

  2. User Interface Design and Implementation: The course covers human capabilities, design principles, prototyping techniques, evaluation techniques, and the implementation of graphical user interfaces. Following are some of the important topics for which lecture notes could be found:
    • Usability
    • User-centered design
    • User interface (UI) software architecture
    • Layout
    • Color design and typography
  3. Database Systems: An introductory course to the foundations of database systems, focusing on basics such as the relational algebra and data model, schema normalization, query optimization, and transactions.
Lecture Notes: The objective of the course is to enhance the familiarity of students with some of the following key concepts:
    • The relational model
    • Schema design
    • Introduction to database internals
    • Database operators and query processing
    • Indexing and access methods
    • Join algorithms
    • Query optimization
    • Transactions and locking
  4. Introduction to Java Programming: An introductory course to software engineering, using the Java™ programming language.
